Detailed InformationThe purpose of Children in the Marketplace is to bring the benefits of an economic way of thinking into the third and fourth grade curricula. the lesson plans do not constitute a curriculum per se. While the subject matter of the unit derives primarily from the field of economics, the lessons stress the explanatory and problem-solving capabilities of the discipline as derived from real-life situations. The goal of the t4eaching activities is to guide third and fourth grade students toward the following realizations:
- As members of society, people fulfill many roles, including those of citizen, consumer, employee, and entrepreneur.
- Individuals, working alone or in groups, can solve problems.
- Making careful choices entails recognizing that there are no "costless" decisions. In making choices, individuals must determine what they will be giving up as well what they gain.
- The notion of choice also includes (a) stating and understanding alternatives, (b) accepting the consequences of a decision, (c) recognizing that individuals cannot have all they want, and (d) accepting the decisions of others.
- Our economic system rewards productive work.
- Education improves an individual's ability to be productive
